Apps for Windows Phone

Oh! You are on Windows Phone? Wow! Did you try exploring the store?
Or browse through the apps in this Essential Apps collection?
Thats so amazing! If you havent, take time to try out all the apps by Microsoft first - here
How many apps do you have? Not many.. Awww! Whatever you do, get acquainted with OneNote.
Or install Evernote.

First of all, install this app, recommended by me and my friend. it provides Shortcut Tiles for frequently used Settings

I am frustrated, so frustrated i dont even want to make a new post to my blog.
There is NO Gmail or Hangouts app for Windows Phone.
I would like to sincerely request all the app developers in the Google team out there to do something, so that Windows Phone users too have access to the services offered by Google.
[3rd-party Gmail App link here!]
Everyone deserves an app for his/her device. You have to deliver equally. Atleast provide an official Google Talk app, why should consumers rely on 3rd-party apps like GChat? What about File Sync and File Sharing via Google Drive - you talked about unified storage. Its going waste now! :-(
[3rd party GDrive Apps - 1 and 2!]

No official Google Maps for Windows Phone, but loads of unofficial ones - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
You must try Waze! or MapQuest!

Dont worry, i have a list for you to try out! Go get Google's only app for your platform first! Needless to stay, still saying, install the Google Search app! By the way, dont ditch the Bing Search App!

For those of you who cant stay without Google's Products and Services (like me), you gotta use unofficial apps as listed -

I dont want to comment about the official YouTube app [made by Microsoft though, not Google] since it keeps going alive and off again and again.
[Kind of a cold war - Microsoft blocks, Google updates, Microsoft unblocks, still there has been a steady war of words between the two - "reasons are crafted", HTML5 stuff ..blah.blah. ]

Wait, I am not talking about WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, FourSquare, etc.
Not even Hike or LINEWeChat or Skype. Instant Messaging is a mess everywhere.
Lets talk about news aggregation apps, where you are sure to learn something new or gain knowledge
rather than spending time typing on that touch keyboard for quarrels and discussions on IM groups.
News - There is NO Pulse, NO Flipboard for you, try Weave or use Bing News!
Better off try Zite!

Weather - If you dont like AccuWeather, which would be too rare an occurrence , try Bing Weather!
There are other apps too - Bing TravelBing Finance or Bing Sports, if you like.
Since Google Translator is not available for your device, Bing Translator will come handy.
It takes time, but things have now arrived in time - Bing is here!
Get the Bing Maps app back in place using this or this, in case you have a Nokia Lumia!
I havent tried this app WizTiles, but i'm lovin' it!

Thanks to Windows Phone’s efforts over the past few years, Bing now has an expanded home in the mobile space. I love Bing Wallpapers! Fire that app everyday and you shall have a good morning! :-)
In this blogpost, I am talking about apps worth exploring.

Photography - I am sorry, but there's no Instagram for you! But you do have Aviary.
You may try Oggl, Camera360, FhotoRoom or Photosynth.
Nokia Lumia's Cinemagraph, Panorama, PhotoBeam, SmartShoot, etc. are good too.
Relief, there are official apps for Tumblr and Flickr! :-)
Before all that, you MUST install FreshPaint! Its just awesome!

Try FunctionPlotter, PeriodicTable if you are a science freak,
Music - Try Deezer, Spotify or Pandora if you love to explore some music!
Breaking News - TeamViewer just launched a new app for WP8 users!

So that was a scanty app store collection for you, you have any ideas [like I do],
contact me via comments or get started building your apps right here.
Microsoft made a WYSIWYG WebApp for AppDevs called "Windows Phone App Studio"
Follow the 4 simple steps - Idea. Content. Style. Use as mentioned here. Get

Ready. Set. Go. Done!

Web Browsing - Tired of using IE [Internet Explorer] again on your Windows Phone, u think there's no other choice? You're wrong. There's UC Browser for you! Maybe you can find Opera Mini or Opera Mobile too! Nokia users you have got Nokia Express, what else do you want?
Do you use a Windows 8 device, then you must try this Windows Phone app for Windows 8 [PC]!

I shall list more apps as i find time to crawl and do research on the whole new app ecosystem!
Let me get back to my Digit Fast Track to Windows Phone [written a year ago, for WP7] - to understand the evolution of WP from WP& to WP8 and anticipate the future of Windows Phone.
RIP MeeGo! And now, RIP Symbian

An advice - Make good use of SkyDrive! It alone does the job of Dropbox & SugarSync!
[No official mobile apps for these cloud storage services for the Windows Phone platform; Maybe they aren't coming any soon either. So start developing yourself. You already have free access to their API. ]
Cloud Storage / File Sync : No cloud storage provider provides official apps for Windows Phone except Box. Btw, you can try these 3rd party apps - dropboxDropbox or FileBox, Caramel for Sugarsync. Wait. There's another cloud storage service Copy for you!

Update: Apps for Windows Phone can be download manually and transferred via other media [Bluetooth/USB/WiFi/etc] from the official Windows Phone website as .xap files
(like how iOS uses .ipa files and Android uses .apk files) and hence, cracked apps too might be available if you search using better tools and appropriate keywords.

You must try TouchDevelop. And dont forget to send feedback - SuggestionBox to Microsoft!
This platform is heating up fast, it is just lukewarm yet. Android and iOS, watch out! Others, please maintain silence. Who knows the future of Blackberry? Palm webOS is already dead. Bada & Symbian are history. Maemo is obsolote. MeeGo couldnt stand up for a fight. Taizen packs a punch. Lets wait for FirefoxOS devices in common man's hands. #Geeksphone

Wanna try access/transfer files from the PC - Try Tonido for WP here, Also available for iOS, Android, BlackBerry! Just like BTSync!

If you use iOS, try out GDrive.
PS: This Dictionary app for Windows Phone is just awesome.

Cloud IDEs

"Software Factories" and "Component Markets" are now dead.
Ever-used Call-back functions in Javascript? Worked with Clojure? Tried WIMP?

Okay. Back to Coding! We all code. We code in the day and in the night. We code at college and back at home. I think code while having food and dream code while travelling. So code is the primary entity.
But code has to be written, typed, tested, reviewed and modified, optimized so that the whole universe of things evolves and a whole new revolution is set in motion and the momentum keeps things going. There's no force. It just needs an impulse. A Spark! A thought! An idea and thats all!

So we code hard! And maintain or possess multiple copies of the code to roll back or start from scratch.
Come Web IDEs that do all this online.

OwnCloud Research Survey

Whats OwnCloud?

OwnCloud is a private cloud storage service project with an accompanying open source code repository, started by Frank Karlitschek, that used WebDAV. ownCloud isn't just about syncing files. It syncs not just files but contacts, calendars and bookmarks across devices. It even features music streaming features! it has about 4e5 users. ownCloud enables businesses to host their own, on premises or remote, cloud storage while maintaining regulatory and compliance needs. Can be put to good use for educational purposes and implemented in University campuses.

Google Earth And a little more

I use Google Earth more than Google Maps!
It can be used on Desktops, the Web or on Mobile devices [iOS and Android].

Today i discovered that there is also something like Google Earth Pro.

Google Earth Pro is a 3D interactive globe that can be used to aid planning, analysis and decision making. Businesses, governments and professional users from around the world use Google Earth Pro data visualization, site planning and information sharing.

Scraping Text from their product page:

Google Earth Pro | $399

Google Earth Pro includes the same easy-to-use features and imagery as the free version of Google Earth, but with additional professional tools designed specifically for business users.

  • Utilize data layers to locate your target demographic
  • Compute distances and areas using measurement tools
  • Use Movie Maker to produce media collateral
  • Print high-resolution images for presentations and reports
  • Import large vector image files to quickly map GIS data
  • Map addresses with the Spreadsheet Importer
And there's also a Google Earth for Enterprise version:

Google Earth Enterprise

Google Earth Enterprise is intended for organizations that have large quantities of geospatial data and allows users to synthesize terabytes of imagery, terrain and vector data to make a quick mapping application for intended users.
  • Create custom layers for Google Maps or Google Earth with private data
  • Compose a map from custom imagery and road tiles based on your data
  • Limit access to various points of interest layers and keep your sensitive data secure
Start exploring people! Virtually Travel on the Earth, traverse the Moon, surf around Mars or just gaze at the Sky.

Steve Jobs Quotes

Can One Man change the whole World? Yes.
See  How Steve Jobs Changed The World!
I just saw that.
So now i m gonna stay Hungry and stay Foolish!
I am gonna do something
that will make people change their mind from
"Do i need this?" to "Can i stay without this?"

Its shocking ever time i read it that he was kicked out of his own company.

If you have an iPhone,
Ask Yourself: Do I Need This?

The next video clip i am gonna watch is
"Do I Need This?" - a quirky film about consumerism, excess, and what we really need in life

A humble request for smokers, Stop Smoking! Please!

A Few Quotes by Jobs:
  • "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become."
  • "If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on."
  • "Technology is nothing. What's important is that you have a faith in people, that they're basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they'll do wonderful things with them."
My favorite:
"Design is a funny word. It is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
So be enthusiastic about what you do! And one more thing. Its not faith in technology. Its faith in people.

Next, read these articles. I havent and wont:

Quick Access Links to Google Accounts and Feedback

This article aims to give you QuickAccess to your Google Account Data and Settings similar to how people using certain specific models of the Sony VAIO laptops get to boot to the web under 5 or 10 seconds.
Thanks to SplashTop!

We all use search engines. More often, we use Google than Bing or DuckDuckGo or DogPile.
Who still uses yahoo ? [i dont]
More importantly, most of us [we] use Google Chrome. As per the pie chart i imagine, the next big chunk goes to Mozilla Firefox, then Opera [ the Next & 15 worth a try ], and maybe
Safari [its dead for Windows now, though you can still use the last release 5.34.57.2 :-( ].

Who still uses Internet Explorer? [i do, we all do]

So all search engines love to have feedback. And all users are sincerely requested to provide it.
Now, Google is not just a search engine. It is the God of the Internet and the Virtual Universe.
It has so many products on offer for its superabundant users belonging to different countries, states, regions, cultures, speaking/interpreting and understanding different languages, using these services across a wide variety of devices - now mostly mobile/portable. Whatever you do, people differentiate people.

I take Feedback very seriously! A lesson learnt from an academic subject "Communication Skills"
during my engineering course.Do you take or give feedback too? Every human does. Even Robots do!

So Google gives you this one stop hyperlink where you can find all the feedback you have ever given for all products/services you use - all in one single place. One Account. One Password. All of Google.
Google Feedback - My Reports

I have a few important quick links for all Google Accounts account-holders [you, the user]:

If you are not yet using Google Chrome, then head straight to http://chrome.com or chrome.google.com or if you like typing a lot - https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser
[dont click on the links now! :p]

I once heard an ethical hacker 'Ankit Fadia' say [maybe said more than once before or after that instant]
"If you use Google, stop using it!"
So let me rephrase it [incorrectly], If you use Google Chrome, stop using it!
Do backup your Chrome Sync Data somehow before you migrate to something else.
See shortlink or longlink.

A lil bit on Ankit Fadia. Some say he is fake. I dont know what the title of that article is supposed to mean. I have seen him myself. He is not fake. He is for real. Both shockingly and ironically, his own website got hacked twice - first instance & the second ! Read his biography here. So thats all about hacking and security. Oh yes! Security is my next topic - Security and your Google Account.

Till then, you should get started with Mozilla Firefox, if you havent yet.
Jump quickly to mozilla.com or mozilla.org or longlink via firefox.com.

A Summary page for Google Storage associated with your Google Account - shortlink or longlink. yes you now have 30 GB space. Not just 15 GB anymore. Those days are gone when you had just a gigabyte to spare for your mails. No need for Inbox Zero anymore.
You can always use Mailbox if you have an iOS device though :-)

Okay. Google Account Security!
Goto this page or type security.google.com into your browser's address bar.
Navigate to this page to sniff the logs for a suspicious activity.
Use Google Account Activity Report and Enjoy Analytics for your Google Account. Here!
Anyday use the Dashboard! I didnt mean that one on your Mac OS X [in case you use one]!

And here is the list of all products you ever used with your (current) google account.
Most people have two or more. i have 10+ i guess. How many do you? Let me know in the comments.

Never worry about your information/data, just hope Google takes privacy seriously.

PS: The Terms of Usage and Privacy Policy details of GMail here. For any help, visit this page.
Also, keep checking out the features of Gmail as they keep adding new stuff with time here.

Tip: Use Google Search History to recall links visited in the past, lost due to some reason. Just type history.google.com or google.com/psearch or google.com/searchhistory

Anyone uses Opera Mail?
